Pet Portrait of Frasier

This post is going to have everyone thinking of the holidays and it's much to early for that however here is a pet portrait I just finished of a cute little West Highland Terrier named Frasier. The drawing is 11x14" done in colored pencil on charcoal gray Canson Mi Tientes paper. It is exactly the pose my customer wanted, she also chose the winter or holiday themed scarf and wanted pine trees

Then, the history of Halloween itself is derived from the festival celebrated by Celtic people (the population of Central Europe) in ancient times. The festival is for the celebration of the end of the harvest season, or so-called 'Celtic New Year'. Celtic people for generations who embrace Paganism (beliefs / spiritual practices the worship of idols) used the opportunity to make the festival by slaughtering cattle and stockpiling food for the winter.

September Sunset #4

Dip pen, ink and watercolor
Another beautiful sunset before the rain sets in for four days. The days are getting shorter and cooler, but I'm not giving up my flip flops, yet. The colors are becoming quite a bit darker and foliage is starting to dot the landscape. The sun has moved in the sky from the first one I did a few weeks ago.

Sunset gathering spot—Munjoy Hill overlooking the Back Cove in Portland Maine

There is usually a flurry of activity for the 30 minutes I am drawing and painting the changes in light and color that are happening so quickly. The decision to choose and place colors comes with water splashing and paint flying. I do not always make the best choice, but I just keep painting until the sun has set. Sometimes the colors bleed and then I get mud and then I get mad and then I exclaim...sometimes under my breath and sometimes a little louder...

It is always so much fun and I look forward to the next one.

Beautiful September days

My good friend Patti and I took a 10 mile walk along the bluffs and beaches in Scarborough Maine. At the end of Scarborough Beach (the 5 mile halfway point) was this wonderful found object beach sculpture shack.

Another evening of sunset watching/sketching. I clearly do not enjoy the quickly changing beauty as much as the rest of the people that are just watching—I'm painting as fast as I can. Trying to keep up with the changes in light and color, realizing the paint is too wet and blending together and then, oh my god it has set! After the sun is gone and it is getting dark, I sometimes reflect...did I really see it?

Waiting For Weather

I wish our sky looked like this right now!  I'm so tired of the heat and humidity.  I shouldn't complain because it's fairly rare weather for our area but we've been dealing with it for well over a month and I would like some nice cool rain.

I know the majority of the country has been dealing with heat and humidity for the entire summer and I'm sounding like a real sissy but I'm used to our usual mild and dry summers.  I thought that painting something that looked cool and wet would make me feel better and maybe act as a suggestion for some cooler weather - an artistic rain dance.  After all, it is Fall now.  We probably won't get any rain for at least a month or two but I can dream, can't I?

This is an oil painting on a small stretched canvas.  I did an under painting of red and after it was dry I used a very limited palette of muted colors, letting pieces of the red show through.

Sunset—September 20,2012

Dip pen and ink, watercolor, the sun and the moon

I'm painting as fast as I can!

A friend called to catch the sunset last night. As I hesitated, I was reminded that in a few months from now the sun will be setting a 4:15 pm and it will be bitter cold.

A big crowd of people were enjoying watching the sun go from bright yellow to blood orange to hot pink as it dipped below the horizon over the western mountains of Maine and New Hampshire. Not quite as relaxing for me...paint was flying everywhere as I frantically tried to capture it before it set.

After the sun disappeared behind the mountains and I put my sketchbook on the ground to dry, the sky turned cerulean blue with big pale pink clouds. The almost first quarter moon was heading east across the sky and glowing bright white from the light of the sun. The beauty unfolding before me took my breath away!!!

Karen Rosasco Watermedia & Composition Workshop

This week our studio is hosting a 5-day experimental watermedia workshop with NY artist Karen Rosasco. The focus of the workshop is to work in a rather abstract manner using techniques such as layered acrylic, charcoal, collage, relief printing, layering mixed media and textured gel medium.  On the first day we began by coating large sheets of watercolor paper with gloss medium, then layers of

Lake Powell Canyon II - Acrylic on TerraSkin

This is painted from the same photo as last week's painting.  The colors and lighting are pretty different though.   This painting is much larger than last week's and the majority of the painting was poured using liquid acrylics.  I went pretty bold with the color.  It's much brighter in real life.  There are things that I like best about each painting but I can't decide which one I like better overall.  I would love to have your comments.

Ampersand Clayboard Boxes

I purchased nine 5x5" clayboard box kits from Ampersand with the intention of doing a series of drawings on the tops of the boxes and inside the boxes when the covers are lifted. I've chosen ocean life as a theme and worked on the drawings for the tops of the boxes shown here, placed close together. Because the clayboard is too smooth of a surface to draw on, I'm using white stonehenge paper

Lake Powell Canyon - Watercolor on TerraSkin

Here is a small painting on TerraSkin.  This time, I used watercolor instead of acrylics.  It was a bit harder to build layers since the watercolors are very liftable on the TerraSkin.  The one exception was the color that I used in the sky.  For some reason, these blues didn't want to lift and, of course, I started with the sky and wasn't very careful because I expected to be able to lift off my messy areas.  The blues I used were ultramarine and cerulean which aren't staining colors so I'm not sure why that happened.  I think I'll try this scene on a larger scale with the acrylics and do some pouring.

We used to go to Lake Powell every year on a houseboat so I have lots of pictures from there.  Lake Powell is so beautiful with the sculptural rocks and the natural blue/orange complementary color scheme.  Nature's so amazing!  The sky there really is ultramarine blue at the top blending into cerulean blue at the horizon.  No wonder I like using those colors in my skies.  Of course, we don't see those kind of skies here in So. Cal. but I do know they exist.

WIP slideshow for Watery World on TerraSkin

Here is the WIP slideshow for Watery World.  I think it was harder and took more time to make this than it did to paint the painting.

I've decided that I need to stick with painting and stay out of the technical world as much as possible.  It's much too stressful!

The music that is playing is "Fingerdance" by Billy McLaughlin.

End of Summer

While sitting on Surfside Beach in Nantucket with friends right after Labor Day two years ago, I took several photos of this scene. It's taken me that amount of time to finally dig out my reference photos, review them and decide on a composition. It's fitting for the time of year and my reflections on summer so I came up with this simple horizontal scene. Just a quiet, end of summer afternoon,

Watery World - on TerraSkin

This painting wins the prize for the most fun to paint.  I've always loved to paint Koi - which you know if you've been following my blog for any length of time - but painting them on Terra Skin is wonderful!  The surface, along with using acrylics like watercolors, allowed me to get the feeling of water and know that I could layer without disturbing my previous painting.  I am going to continue fiddling with this a bit more but I wanted to post it for this week's painting.  It took SO long to paint.  It's large, 25" x 35", and a lot of the time was spent waiting for layers to dry.  This was painted with  a combination of pouring and direct painting.  So far, this probably has about 20 thin layers of paint, which gives it a wonderful translucent quality.  I took WIP pictures which I will make into a slide show later this week (if the pictures turned out) so you can see my process.

Last days of summer

Sadly, summer in Maine is waning. The light is changing and the shadows getting longer. On this morning's Sophie walk along the waterfront, I needed a jacket.
Lately my sketchbook gets stuffed into my bag only to to lay unopened at the bottom...never seems to be any time as we enjoy the last of these wonderful warm summer days.

Sunflower bouquet from the market down the street.

My friend Suma CM and her husband Michael came to Maine on a holiday a few weeks ago. After lunch, Michael went on a bike ride and Suma and I went off to sketch. We sat against a building sketching the lobster boats in back of Custom House Wharf just across from where I live. I used a dip pen and ink. Of course it became a mess—ink all over. You can see Suma's sketch here.

Out for dinner with my friends Mary and Liza at the East Ender Cafe. This is beautiful Liza.

Dinner at a friend's house. The hydrangeas and some other unidentifiable flowers were wilting in a vase of greenish water, but the tomatoes and green pole beans were fresh from the garden and "delish". Lucky me, I got to take home a bounty of these delicious green beans and tomatoes of all varieties that have taken over the garden (along with the weeds).
