"Red Poppy & Buds" 5x7 Colored Pencils on Canson Mi-Tients Paper
I decided to draw this poppy and the buds as the second in my framed floral series. I really like to draw poppy flowers, they are easy for me to draw and this one was from a photo that I have in my collection of flower photos. It looks very nice in the frame below and I may do several more. It may just end up going to the same auction for charity as the Blue Iris I did last month. I'm pleased with the way it turned out on the paper. Hope you like this one.
Hiking in the White Mountains, New Hampshire
Living in Maine has given me the opportunity to spend wonderful times hiking in the spectacular White Mountains of New Hampshire. One of my favorite things to do is a long hike with friends and stay overnight at one of the AMC huts along the Appalachian Trail. Upon arrival, I usually race into the hut to secure one of the highly coveted lower bunks and then I can enjoy the rest of the day and the amazing views.
View looking east towards the Presidentials and Mt WashingtonWe hiked the Gale River Trail to Twin Mountain and stayed overnight at the Galehead Hut. A beautiful hike straight up a rocky trail to 4,000 ft along the Gale River. Warm early summer day at the bottom and quite cold and wintery at the top. Temperatures dipped into the 20's that night and we awakened to a dustimg of snow on the peaks.
Hiking with my wonderful friend Patti and her brother Peter. We had so much fun being outdoors, putting one foot in front of the other and enjoying the spectacular views as we acended to the hut. The walk back down the next day had the challege of being a little icy and slippery, but at the bottom it was warm and sunny and we were starving so we enjoyed a picnic before heading home.
These boots have taken me miles in the mountains and are amazingly comfortable, but it is always great to take them off at the end of a long day on the trail. I always bring something cozy and comfortable to wear around the hut at night.
I sketched as the siblings played cribbage. 
Here I am at the top with prayer flags woven by my friend Sarah Haskell for her project Woven Voices—Messages from the Heart. Her amazing prayer flags are woven by a community of weavers from written messages of peace. They are hanging all over the world unraveling and releasing messages of hope, peace and renewal. The flags hung outside the hut overnight, however, I could not leave her flags up on the mountain because of "Leave No Trace". Soon, I will take these flags to another mountain...Category ›

I've been away from my easel and my drafting table since my last post earlier this month. It's a long time not to be able to do anything creative as an artist. When things happen, sometimes life has a harsh way of throwing curves at you when you least expect it.
I don't mind telling you that a few weeks ago, my husband was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and ever since, we've been busy with Dr's appointments, tests and a flurry of activity at home.
Through it all, it was suggested to me to continue my artwork and posting on my blog, if anything, as a way to help me to relax and help clear my mind. I think that this is good advice and one that I'll try to do periodically as time permits.
(Above is a photo of my husband standing by the ocean in Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island. It's a place where we often like to stop and get a good view of the ocean and the city, while watching large cargo and cruise ships go by.)

One of the environmental perks of this "paper" is that it is biodegradable in 3-9 months with enough heat, moisture and sun. Of course, I don't want my art degrading but I would imagine that a piece of regular paper would be destroyed much, much quicker in that type of environment than this surface would. Remember people, don't put your art in the direct sun and definitely don't put your paintings in the landfill and expect for them to survive. : )
This paper has a wonderful chalky feel to it and it comes in various weights. I think this painting is done on the heaviest paper. The paint sits on the surface much like on yupo (I'm talking about watercolors) but I think this surface is more forgiving in a few instances. I started a completely different design on this paper and erased all of it and that didn't seem to change the surface of the paper. With Yupo, I've found that erasing is a big no no. Also, fingerprints don't seem to be such an issue with this paper as they are with Yupo. Lifting paint was similar when the paint was freshly dried but seemed to be a little harder to lift as it sat longer. It could still be lifted but didn't feel as impermanent as on Yupo and it was easier to get a blended edge when lifting instead of being either white or the color. Of course, I have NOT had much luck working on Yupo so for those of you that know what you're doing, these issues are probably not even problems for you.
I like the TerraSkin surface and look forward to painting on a large piece of it. I really like the effect of the paints on this paper, which is similar to the look on Yupo, but working on TerraSkin seems easier.
I would love to hear from anyone that has painted on this surface with watercolor and what your experiences have been.
