Three Trees
There's nothing like waiting til the last minute to do something. Procrastinating is one of the things I do best so this makes sense. This month's virtual paintout location is New Zealand and I did look around through Google Street Maps at the beginning of June but didn't take the time to pick any spots to paint even though I thought it was such a beautiful country. So today, with one day to go before the deadline, I decided to paint something.
When I first looked around I found a lot of scenes with fog that were really cool but of course I couldn't find them today so I picked this pretty spot. This was done with a palette knife.
I can't wait to see where we will be virtually traveling next month.

"Oranges" Colored Pencil Study on 11x14 Canson drawing paper
I just finished drawing these oranges that I had on my drafting table tonight. I borrowed a library book on colored pencil techniques and decided to give it a try. The book looked very interesting and the images appealed to me. This is the result. I really like the way it turned out. I find the oranges look more realistic using the methods that was suggested in the book. I drew these always late in the day so I could take advantage of this kind of light. It made the shadows longer and much stronger. I did change a few things that I wanted to do using my own methods of drawing and I also wanted to give the drawing a little of an abstract contemporary feel at the same time by using different colors to fill in the shadows. Giving it a more modern look, I think made it challenging and fun.
Succulent sketching
This has been a busy, very fun week with house guests but not much time for artwork. I used the little time I had to do a colored pencil and ink sketch for the inside of the Tustin Garden Club yearbook. I do the artwork each year for the cover and also 2 simplistic sketches for the inside. So now I only have one more sketch to do and that one is almost finished. The cover will be "Graptoveria" from a couple of weeks ago so I wanted to do different succulents for the inside.
It was fun working with colored pencil again with some ink but I really prefer doing more realistic pieces with colored pencil. Unfortunately I find that I really don't have the patience to spend the time that is required to do that. I'm always in awe of artists that do such detailed colored pencil art. If you want to see some incredible examples of realism in colored pencil, visit the Colored Pencil Society of America website. So many beautiful art pieces make me both frustrated and inspired.
"Red Grapes" Colored Pencil Study on 9x12 Canson drawing paper
I finished my drawing this morning. When I got up, it was cloudy and raining and still is at the moment, so you must forgive me on the exposure of the image. It was an interesting challenge for me tackling these grapes. For one thing, as I was drawing one grape at a time, I was thinking, oh boy, I have 20 more to go, this may take some time to complete. But, it wasn't so bad and I was able to complete it in just a few days. I know that for some experienced artists, drawing time for them is faster. One thing is true about doing colored pencils, it's a slower medium that you just can't rush. You have to be relaxed and willing to take the time on your drawing, thinking things out thoroughly. My next drawing project will be oranges. I want to try to complete a fruit series and have them framed, all in the same type of frame so that they all match. That will be my new goal for the next little while.
"Grapes" Work in Progress 2
I worked most of last night on this second part of my drawing. Just a few more grapes to work on and more shadows to do on the table. It's very bright in my Studio right now and the grapes are sitting on my drafting table. The shadows are not really that strong, just mostly at the bottom and inside where the stem is, along the center. At this point, I'm not sure whether I should add more grapes to the center because I feel it doesn't seem complete. I'm not sure if just making it look darker is the answer either. Well, I'll just keep working on it and see what kind of result I'll end up with. It's a good thing that it's fairly easy to erase and make changes as you want to, that's what I like about doing Art.
"Grapes" Work in Progress
Tonight, I am sitting at my drafting table in my studio, and I'm drawing these grapes that I picked up at the grocery store earlier in the week. They are red imported grapes from the U.S.A and they taste sweet. I wanted to show that much like in painting, where you would perhaps do an under painting to tone your image before actually applying color to it, the same can apply using colored pencils as I've done here. I'm using a sheet of Canson Mi-Teints paper, which is my favorite paper to use for colored pencils. I hope you'll visit my blog to see the end result of this drawing.
Beginning and Finishing
I have started a new piece, another drawing of tulips. I seem to be attracted to them lately. This photo I took on my deck of beautiful orange tulips in the blue glass vase. I'm going to add a background which will be a simple band of landscape and a lot of pale blue sky. And once the background is drawn, I will have to readjust color in the tulips so they will come forward. The surface is Rtistx
"Apple Trio" 11x14 Colored Pencil Study on Canson Drawing Paper
These apples may look a little odd, and that's because they were a little odd looking. I had acquired them at the front desk of my hotel in Victoria while on vacation. The hotel always keeps a bowl of fresh apples for hotel guests to take with them to their rooms or when going out. It's a thoughtful and appreciated service.
I began drawing these while on vacation and then ended up finishing them after I got home. The look of the apples themselves are what inspired me to draw them. Their skins were heavily veined with yellow patches on them, as well as having odd shapes. They made for interesting subjects to draw or paint. I like how this drawing seems to have an abstract quality to it.
Soon I'll be thinking about what to do next, more veggies maybe?

Copala - Watercolor
Copala is a small, quaint town in Mexico not too far from Mazatlan. I loved this scene with the strange windows and mix of architectural details. Of course, the colors are great too. Each building in the town is a different color and most of them are bright. The bougainvillea are growing everywhere which adds more shocks of color. There are donkeys roaming through the town, each with a human attached waiting to charge tourists for a chance to take their picture with the donkey. I resisted the temptation.

"Back in Calgary"
I'm back from taking a couple of weeks off. I needed the rest. We drove from Calgary to Vancouver Island which takes 2 days to get there and another 2 days to get back. It's a long drive but worth it because the scenery is so beautiful and there are many places to stop and site see. My husband and I have family on the Island, particularly in the Comox Valley region. We try to make a point to visit as often as possible within the summer months. I was able to take the photos I wanted, but couldn't get as many floral photos that I was hoping to get this year. It seems that the West Coast was a little colder than normal this past spring and the flowers didn't all get planted or that they are blooming late. Either way, I didn't get as many this time around. I do have some that I took and will be posting them soon. As for my art, I'm still working with colored pencils and I just finished a small drawing that I started while on vacation and will be posting that one soon as well. I just hope no one gets too bored with what I've been doing artistically these days. It seems I'm on a fruit drawing frenzy.
4th of July Commissioned Artwork
This is a small colored pencil drawing (7x10") in which I was commissioned to do by the Grand Marshalls of the Bristol, RI Fourth of July Committee. The drawing was a gift to the Chairwoman of the Committee for her years of dedication and hard work. I was honored to be the artist asked to do the artwork. The Fourth of July is huge in Bristol, RI. The parade is the largest and oldest parade in the

Candy Apples in Neocolor II Crayons
Here are the candy apples finished with Neocolor crayons. To review my process: first I put a layer of color on the surface with Neocolor II crayons. Next I added water and dissolved the crayon. When it dried, I added a layer or two of colored pencil to every area of the piece. But then decided I wanted to punch it up with color so I added more Neocolor crayon on top and left it dry, not adding

"Comox Harbour,Looking East" 16x20 Acrylic on canvas
I'm still on vacation at the moment and it's great that our hotel has free Wi-Fi connection for the Internet. I'm taking advantage of it and posting this commissioned painting I did about 2 years ago for a couple who live in the Comox region on Vancouver Island. I had a chance to take a picture of it which is hung up in their living room. What luck, I thought! The painting is taken from Comox Harbour, at the east end of the harbour where you can see just a few sailing boats, a forested area and the mountains in the distance. At the time, I was standing on the docks when I took the picture which was close to 9pm in the evening in August and the sun was just setting in the west. I remembered how lovely the whole scene looked at the time. I'm glad I now have the chance to show this painting on my blog, hope you like it.
Neocolor II Playtime!
Two weeks ago in my class, we experimented with Neocolor II water soluble crayons and I liked them so much that I ordered a set of 84 crayons to try. They just arrived and I just couldn't wait to begin. I decided to create a small candy apple piece because I'm anxious to see what kind of candy apples I could do with these crayons. I am using an 8x8" 2" cradled gessobord coated with (my usual)
Graptoveria - Watercolor
I'm not really sure what this plant is named but I do know that it is a succulent. : ) In my succulents book, the graptoveria looked similar to this and was described as having the variety of colors in one plant that this one does. That's what drew me to it. The combination of colors almost make it look iridescent.
This is a large painting and I think I will enter it in the Watercolor West competition coming up.
Speaking of competitions, today I got the news that my painting Fish and Flotsam has been accepted into the San Diego Watercolor Society's International Exhibit. I am so thrilled! This is a prestigious exhibit and I feel honored to have one of my paintings included. This is the time of year that many of the big shows deadlines come around. There are two other international watercolor shows (Watercolor West and National Watercolor Society) and a couple of local shows, all with deadlines within the next month. Now I'm wishing I had worked more in watercolor the past few months. Since my paintings have been all over the place (every medium imaginable), now I'm feeling the crunch. Sometimes I am more focused when my time is limited so we'll see what happens.

The Intricate Insides of Peppers
Earlier this week I was reading through some artist blogs and found an oil painting of an inside of a pepper by Cindy Haase that I found so fascinating and decided to have my colored pencil classes try drawing this same subject. I purchased yellow, orange and green peppers in intricate shapes, cut them in half and let each person choose one (with the exception of one student who wanted to draw a

Bird of Paradise Murals
Here are two murals that I recently finished. They are painted in niches on either side of a door in Mexico. They are very similar because of their symmetrical architectural placement but I didn't want them to be identical.
This week is the anniversary of my posting a painting each week for the past 3 years. I think my art has progressed throughout this process and it's really been a lot of fun. I plan to keep it up and hopefully, I will post more than one each week in the coming year. My self-imposed deadline every Monday has kept me on track and some weeks it's been a real challenge getting a painting done but compared to the many daily painters, I look like a slacker. Of course, many of my paintings are much larger and more involved than most of the daily paintings but I should be able to do some smaller paintings each week along with my larger paintings, right?
Both murals are:

Portrait Workshop with Michael Peery
This weekend I took an oil painting portrait workshop with Michael Peery. I took this workshop for two reasons, I am hoping what I learned will help me with my colored pencil portraits, in terms of color and value and rendering the human figure. I also wanted to do something different and out of the box for me. I always believe that one medium will influence another.Michael Peery is a fantastic

Three Shiny Apples
I have been asked to create a small colored pencil artwork for the CPSA silent auction fundraiser called "Small Works of Great Magnitude". The silent auction is held during the national convention week and exhibition which is in Dallas, TX July 12-16. The silent auction takes place during the Members' Night on Thursday, July 14 and is to benefit CPSA's exhibition costs. All of the works will be
Balancing Stones
I draw this small piece along with my morning class on Tuesday. I gave each person a piece of Aubergine colored Art Spectrum Colourfix paper and everyone chose a few stones to put together in a composition and draw. I chose to stack four small stones and I like the way this little drawing turned out. Each stone was different, the bottom one being the most intricate. The Colourfix paper is nice
