I think I'm in Love!.. with my new medium that is. This past weekend, I visited my art supply store and decided to buy a small set of Oil Pastels. Lately, I've been wanting to try these little sticks of color after seeing an artist friend use it in the studio. She was working on a landscape and when she held it up for us to see, I was taken by the vibrant colors. The set I bought is from Faber-Castell, called Creative Studio. I'm not familiar with Pastels, but I am familiar with the manufacturer, since I use their line of colored pencils which I love, so I am hoping these are just as good a quality. As I started drawing with these, I wasn't sure what to expect. It felt strange for me to be holding the pastel stick in my fingers, a little awkward and not knowing quite how to hold it properly but I managed and applied the color the best I could on the pastel paper. I found that I had to press down on the paper to apply the color and to make sure the color got into all the grooves of the paper for best coverage. Then I had to scrape off all the little bits of pastel color that is left behind on the paper, a little messy but not so bad as the chalk type pastels. I then blended the surface using my index finger. Next time, I'll have to try using Turpenoid or Mineral Spirits to do some of the blending and see how that works. I'll have to keep on practicing but not too bad a job I think for a first try at using pastels.
