Tracy Arm Falls

I was out of town for several days this past week and I didn't have much time to paint so I decided to finish a painting I had started a (long) while ago.  It is such a good feeling when I finish a project that's been hanging around the studio so I don't know why I have so many unfinished projects.  I guess it's an even better feeling to start a new project.  : )

Anyway, I was glad I had a painting that was almost finished so I could stay on track with finishing a painting a week.  I was cutting it a little too close this week.

This scene is in Alaska.  We were on a cruise a couple of years ago and I have many photos of wonderful places that will provide reference material for paintings for a long time.  Alaska is so beautiful that by the end of the week, my eyes had overdosed on 'beautiful'.  The Tracy Arm, where the reference photo for this painting was taken,  has many waterfalls and amazing vistas as well as wildlife.  I was wishing that my camera had a better zoom so that I could get some close-ups but even without it, I got some nice pictures.  The water in this area is such an lovely shade of turquoise.  The glacial ice pulverizes the rock as it moves over the surface and as the ice melts, the powdered rock is suspended in the water and it reflects the light and makes the water a milky turquoise color.  It looks unreal.

Hollyhocks

Hollyhocks are such dramatic flowers, reaching six to eight feet into the air.  I really love these flowers so here I am painting them again.  I tried for a looser, more impressionistic feeling than in my previous paintings of them.   I think all of my other hollyhock paintings were done in watercolors and this one is oil.  I'm really enjoying painting in oils right now.  These small format paintings are less involved than my usual ones and it's fun to do a spontaneous project.

Corsica III

I had to sneak in one more painting this month for the virtual paintout in Corsica. I found so many places I wanted to paint. I made a lot of changes from the reference photo on this one too. I just can't stop myself from trying to make an environment prettier although I find the reference photo very interesting. I added a person to make the scene feel more lived in. It's funny to me that I feel compelled to add people to my paintings for the virtual paintout. I really don't feel comfortable painting (or drawing) people so I never added them to my paintings until October, when I started the virtual paintout challenges. I'm still not ready to try them in any medium other than oil (since they can be painted over if I mess them up) but maybe this will be the year that I venture outside of my comfort zone. Below is the reference photo from Google street maps.

Belfast Shoreline

This is my first attempt at painting from Google's "street view" maps. I am submitting it to Bill Guffy's Virtual Paintout. The first day of each month, a new location is posted and artists are able to 'stroll' through the streets of the chosen city from home and choose a scene to paint. This painting took me out of my comfort level for a few reasons. This felt almost like painting a plein air painting which I don't really do. It's hard for me to edit things out of a scene. I also have never painted a figure or animal so I'm afraid these look pretty amateurish. I tried to make the man hunched over against the cold with his hands in the pockets of his jacket. I also tried to capture the feeling of a cold, dreary day by using muted colors, definitely not my favorite palette of colors. And finally, I painted this in oils, a medium I'm not completely familiar with yet. I think it's good to push out of our comfort level and try new things so even though I wouldn't count this as one of my best paintings, I am happy that I did it and plan to participate in the virtual paintout challenge each month.

Loquats oil painting

This is the first painting of my weekly painting series. I have just quit a watercolor class I had been taking and hope to strike out on my own. In the past, I have depended on teachers as crutches and think it is time to try to critique my own paintings and, through both experimentation and experience, improve all aspects of my artistic endeavors.
