Determination

Don't feel sorry for this poor neglected onion.  Obviously, it was past its prime for eating purposes, but  was determined to use its strength to grow, even though it sat ignored on the kitchen counter.

This onion was part of a still life set-up that my friend brought over for us to paint.  The other vegetables on the plate didn't catch my interest enough to paint them, but I thought this onion with its greenery had a graceful look and a lot of personality.  I also liked that it could grow so much without dirt or water.

I used a dark background to give it a dramatic effect and a sense of importance.  This poor onion that was so neglected has now been immortalized, which is good because I never did plant it and now it's gone forever.

Lone Fuchsia

I wasn't in the mood to paint today but needed to get something done to post so that I didn't miss my self-imposed deadline to post a painting each Monday.  I was out of town until yesterday so I had to do a last minute painting today.

Usually I can dig up some motivation but today a combination of it being a drizzly day and having no ideas of what to paint made painting a frustration. I started looking through my old, tired reference photos and found this lone fuchsia.

I also tried a different paper for this one.  A friend gave me a sample pack of Kilimanjaro paper and I chose one of the 300# pieces.  I've used Arches 300# before and generally like it but all of the heavy papers tend to suck up the paint and the colors that look so nice and rich when wet fade dramatically when they dry.  I lost all of my lights too but that had more to do with not paying attention than a problem with the paper so I played with a pen that has opaque white ink that I just got to add some playful white accents.  I'm not sure whether or not I like this paper but I will give it another try when I'm in a better mood.

Wavering Muse

Wow! Is this weird or what? I do love to experiment. I started this painting intending for it to be a non-representational painting. I poured resist on the paper and moved it around. I kept seeing a face and neck from those lines on the left side. Of course, the face shape is not really realistic but I went with it anyway. The other lines reminded me of one of my bad hair days so I started playing with hair. Then it started to look like it was floating in water so I went in that direction. I need to fix her mouth. The left side has a highlight on it but unless you are looking at it from close up, her mouth looks crooked. I love the feeling of movement in this painting and overall, I'm pretty happy with it.

Picture Perfect

This is a painting that I did about 4 months ago to enter into a juried contest. At the time, I was getting ready to go out of town and was rushing - never a good way to get a successful painting. My original idea was to show how we focus on flowers when looking at a plant. I wanted the three flowers to be three snapshots that brought your eyes to the beauty of the flowers. My plan was to have the background very faded and the snapshots much brighter to show how we really don't usually pay attention to the other parts of the plant. (Of course we, as artists, probably do notice the whole plant.)

I thought it was a good idea but it didn't come across as I wanted for two main reasons. First, choosing yellow flowers was a mistake because yellow has such a light value intensity even at it's brightest so by also having the background light, my flowers didn't really pop. I did make the blue more intense in the snapshot area too but it wasn't enough. Secondly, there was too much background that was faded looking and the whole painting was too washed out. I've cropped out about 3 inches from the bottom because there was still too much background. It may be too bottom heavy now. I only cropped it in the photo so I can change my mind on that part.

I wasn't sure how to fix it without losing my original idea. I looked at it for months with no idea. Finally, I decided to darken the background but use muted, more drab colors to bring the attention to the snapshots. The finished painting is actually a bit brighter than this photo shows it to be. Below is the original painting before I "fixed" it. I'm still not sure it really gets my idea across as strongly as I would like but I do think the value contrasts are better in the above painting. I would love to hear your comments or ideas to make it better. I may do a series using this idea. I think that would be fun. By the way, no, the painting didn't get juried into the show. I didn't think it would and in fact I would have been embarrassed if it had. I only entered it because I plan to enter as many contests as I can as a way to push myself and didn't have any other paintings I wanted to enter.

If you like this original painting better - too bad. It's forever altered. Although if you do feel that way I would like to know.

March 2nd post script: I took a new picture of the re-done painting that shows the color better and I "uncropped" the bottom so if you are looking at this post for the first time, don't be confused. The bottom painting is cropped, the top painting isn't.

Sunny Days

I haven't painted sunflowers for quite awhile and was appreciating a beautiful sunny day so I thought these flowers would make a good subject. I had a small ampersand aquabord (also called claybord textured) and wanted this to be a loose watercolor painting but, as usual, it became a much tighter painting than I had planned. I'm such a literal person it's hard for me to paint loose, gestural paintings. I really appreciate them by other artists but can't seem to paint in that style. Oh well, I guess our personalities are what they are and we expose them through our art.

Magnolia Duo

I decided to push my frustration level this week and finish this painting that I started about 5 years ago and which, after much cursing, I had put into my unfinished pile. It is small, 5" x 7" and is painted on clay board. That surface is very unforgiving and working on it is so different than the way I like to work. I worked more loosely (which is a good thing) and actually enjoyed it. Will I buy more clayboard in the future? I probably won't but I do have some aqua board, also made by Ampersand that I'm excited to try. I does feel good to finish another old project.

Sunflower vignettes

This is a painting that I did about a year ago so it's not my weekly painting. I did it for the Tustin Garden Club yearbook for this upcoming year and wanted to post it with the paintings below so that you can get a feeling for this project. If you visually divide it from top to bottom down the middle, you can imagine what the front and back of the book will look like. The three pictures below are my weekly painting project.

These are small vignettes that will be used throughout the yearbook in various sizes. It's weird to do paintings with no backgrounds. The paintings are very 2 dimensional without them.

Spanish Style Wisteria

I took the reference photo for this painting at a house down the street from our house but I wanted it to look like it was down in Mexico. I don't even know if Wisteria will grow in Mexico but in my mind they can. I love the power we have as artists to alter reality, even if it's only in our minds and on paper (or canvas). Wisterias are so beautiful but for such a fleeting amount of time, I wanted to capture their beauty and my love of Mexico at the same time.

Monster Kumquats

We have a small kumquat tree in our backyard and the first two years it had regular sized kumquats on it. Since then, they have been about 3" long and 2" in diameter! I have never seen another one like it. I've asked a couple of people at nurseries if it is possible for it to have cross pollinated with the meyer lemon next to it but they claim that is impossible. Whatever caused it, I just glad it happened. They are great sliced thinly in salads or just to eat by themselves. That way, I can get rid of all the seeds since I really don't like crunching on those. It also makes a great conversation topic since nobody can guess what kind of fruit it is.

Well, I didn't get a big painting done this week after all. I have a few ideas brewing for some
though. Maybe next week......

Pink Bougainvillea

I'm still working small but I'm ready to go big again. Maybe next week's will be a watercolor painting on a full sheet of paper...or a silk painting....or a pastel..... We'll see how much time I have to play. I'm feeling the pull of abstraction again but with all the wonderful flowers in bloom right now, it's hard not to want to capture their beauty.

Pears II

I did another one day workshop a couple of weeks ago and this shows the influence of my teacher whose method I love. I was never motivated to do any type of still life before but now I really like them.

Wisteria

I'm leaving for Mexico tomorrow for a week so I am posting this early. I didn't want to miss a week. I've been painting a large project that I'm taking to Mexico and finally finished it so I only had time to do a quick watercolor sketch for this week's painting.

Now I'm back to nature. I love succulents and wanted to try painting this aeonium. I love the colors. This is my red/green complementary color palette.
