There is a race of iris, native to the west coast of north America with varieties known collectively as Pacific Coast Native Iris.  They are underappreciated on many levels as they need no summer water and are delicate beauties in many colors.
This white one is grown from seed I harvested, grew and photographed.  I feel like a proud mama!  While primarily colored pencil, this is actually a mixed media piece and all the more beautiful for it.

Work in Progress ~ Blue Iris

I thought I would show another work in progress. I'm working from a cropped photo that I had taken a few years ago on one of my vacation trips to Vancouver Island. My Husband and I were walking through a garden in a park when we spotted a group of Blue Irises. They are among my favorite flowers. Their rich blue color and small dabs of yellow centers on some of the petals make a striking contrast. As you can see by my pallet, its full of color because I tend to do a lot of mixing to get a larger array of tones for this painting. I want to keep the tonal variations softer, so that it will look more natural and have a calming effect to the viewer.

"Blue Iris's" 11x14 Acrylic on canvas

I took pictures of Blue Iris's on my last trip to Vancouver Island in May 2010. The Iris's there were already in full height and in full bloom by May and even earlier in the year in some places. These two, were in a garden at Comox Harbour.

Colored pencil drawing of iris study. The idea is based on Jacqueline Gnott's instructional DVD. I was not really please with the background of this drawing. I think it should be darker. I will have to work on Iris's again.

My study of an iris. The idea and design came from an water color instruction DVD by Jacqueline Gnott. I have purchased several of her instruction DVD's on water color and I am slowly working my way through them. I have not posted very often lately but have been working on these studies. I found the Iris difficult to do and after several false starts these are the results. Still not that pleased with them. The pencil study was ok but the water color one really had me struggling.
